Monday, Mar. 23 — Where’s the Sun?

Well, since it snowed in Chicago yesterday, I suppose there’s no complaining about a little bit of rain and some cloudy skies. A coolish trip from Hilton Head to Savannah with the excitement of crossing the busy, commercial Savannah River and seeing many beautiful river-front homes along the way. We are moored on the forward dock at Isle of Hope Marina which is several miles outside of Savannah proper. It is quite different from Harbour Town. Isle of Hope is small and quaint with modest power and sail boats (with a few exceptions that you’ll see in photos) arrayed in straight dock rows perpendicular to the river’s current. We are on the face wall which means the current runs along our length, creating a constant, yet irregular, lapping sound that we’ll have to get used to at bedtime! I’m thinking it might be restful. Spent the afternoon along the river walk area of Savannah after lunching at Vic’s on the recommendation of Roger’s daughter Kim. Good choice! Appetizers of crispy calamari, crawfish beignets and crab cakes and then full lunches that will hold us until breakfast tomorrow (maybe).

We'll muddle through the cold weather somehow. I call this our "operations center."

One of the other "pleasure craft" plying the ICW -- called the Huntress, she's 179 feet long and rents for $227,000 a WEEK!!! Doesn't include fuel, booze, food or tips. But sleeps 10.

This is another boat we encountered on the ICW -- a working boat moving briskly down the Savannah River.

A drippy day along the river in Charleston. But lunch at Vic's on the River was a bright spot!

  1. Lovely pics. Rex and I are reading every day and feeling quite jealous. Looks like an ideal trip so far. And tell Cliff test no, he cannot get a bigger boat. 🙂

We had a full on blizzard for a few hours today and now it’s all cold again. So cruel.

    1. Can’t say that we are missing Chicago’s wicked weather ways. As grey and drippy as it’s been, the temperatures have been pretty moderate (especially when compared to Chicago!) See you soon.

  2. We are rushing out to purchase twin red rain gear!!! Me thinks you have adjusted to rolling down the river without a problem. Thankfully at last, all is well with our pals. You are keeping a record of wine and champange bottles I hope. I know you will be in the Guinness book of consumption on water craft.
When do you suppose St Augustine will be on your agenda??? How much time should we plan on in Savanna??
We hope to leave here April 2-3. Is it possible to hook up someplace???
Love the blog and wish you all the best each day and night aboard ship!!! Love and hugs……

    1. Our journey down rivers and across sounds have been uneventful (so far!) and relaxing. Docking with tides and river currents has been a learning (and sometimes exciting!) experience. We will be in Titusville, late afternoon of the 2nd. Jessica and Jassa are joining us on the 3rd and we’ll stay until early morning on the 6th. We’d love to see you! Let me know if you and Howie can stop by! We’d love to see you.
